Public Domain Books

You can get free eBooks that are in the public domain in various formats from the sites below. These US sites provide books which are in the public domain in the US. For that reason, you can find books that have not renewed their copyright in the US and currently most books are fifty years or older, but this includes many of the classic books from ancient times to abut the middle 1960's. Most of the books at the sites below start from the Project Gutenberg offerings.

There are other good sites, but I consistently use these. You can search these sites by title, author and in some case genre.

Project Gutenberg: More

• You can read a book online or download the book in various formats.
• You can search by title, author and category or keyword.
• This site has the images for the illustrations in the book.

ManyBooks.net: More

• You can search by author, title, genre or use the eBooks search at the left side for keywords. This site also has a very good advanced search.
• One you have a book page, you can see basic information about the book and a short excerpt from the book.
• To view a book, I suggest you use the Download box on the right side, with the dropdown list of formats 'select format'. This allows for many formats including popular eReaders. Note: for eReaders, you may need to download to your PC first, attach your eReader and copy the book file to the eReader.
• Most books on this site are from Project Gutenberg. There are some Creative Commons books also.
• This site does not provide images from the books, only a book cover image, if available. If you want to see the original illustrations in a book, use the Project Gutenberg site.
• I like this site for the advanced search capabilities and reviews by readers and additional meta data about the book, such as published date, genre and. an excerpt from the book.

Librivox: More
Audio files are provided for download and you can listen to individual chapters.

• Books are read by volunteers. Sometimes by a single reader or a book might be read by several readers, by chapter. These readers are not professional readers, so you may find readers from excellent to average.
• This site also has a very good advanced search capability

My reviews of public domain eBooks

• Interactive version: More
  I wrote this in PHP/HTML/CSS/JavaScript
  It allows you to view the reviews in groups of ten, by expanding or colapsing a range marker.
• Plain list: More
  Uses only HTML and CSS. It has no Javascript, in case you have that turned off.
  You can use your browsers 'find' feature (usually the CTRL and F keys) to search.

On both sites, books are listed by type (audio or non audio) in the order that I read them. I wrote the site to keep track of the books that I had read, since many times I would download a book that I had read a long time before. Now I can do a quick check before duplicating my effort.
